Poetry Project Booklet Instructions and Rubric

Below are the instructions and rubric for the project.

Instructions:


1. Select 8 of the 17 format poems to incorporate into your book from those that we have covered in class. You will revise and perfect those 8 poems from your notebook prior to putting them into your poetry book.

2. Choose 4 poems from those that we covered in the class. You must write them into your poetry book and then on the next page list examples (for each poem if applicable) of the following figurative language terms: simile, metaphor, allusion, alliteration, consonance, assonance, personification, onomatopoeia, oxymoron, hyperbole, pun, understatement.

3. Locate and include 2 of the following 5 kinds of poetry: ballad, elegy, ode, lyric, and sonnet. You will write out each poem, then following the directions for #2 you will list the types of figurative language used in the poem, and finally you will in one paragraph summarize why you chose that particular poem for your book.

4. Finally, you will take time to embellish your poetry book. While this is not an art class, throughout our poetry unit embellishments that accompanied each poem enhanced the reader’s understanding and appreciation of what they read. Do not use graphics from the computer or other sources such as magazines and books.

5. This handout with its rubric on the back must accompany your poetry project book for grading purposes.

EXTRA CREDIT FOR THIRD GRADING PERIOD

1. Check out the book Spy Killer and the packet that goes along with it.
2. There will be two assessments linked with the book- a Post-Mortom of a Protagonist and the 3 Levels of Reading.

You may earn up to 200 extra points if you complete this project and do well on it.

Makeup Tests and Packets and Videos oh my!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We need to close up the missing grades for tests, packet work, and videos by the end of next week. I've already talked to each of you this week so you know who you are. Please make arrangements to meet with me before or after school or during lunch to complete these missing grades. After Thursday, February 17th they will remain zeros in the grade book.

Grading Updates

My apologies everyone. I've spent the day outside shoveling ice off the driveway in preparations for what is to fall tonight. Once I regain total feeling in my hands and arms, I'll start grading your vocabulary tests and update PowerSchool.

Places Vocab/Spelling Test Date

Due to our day off from school, the test date has been pushed back to January 31st. Please be ready to take your test at that time :)

Homework Special Announcement

The homework assignments for the next 2 weeks have been posted to the blog. You may work ahead if you should choose to do so (and I hope that you do!).

Homework 12/3

Here are the homework questions for 12/3. They are due 12/7 :)

1. Freewriting- Write whatever comes to mind in response to the word explore. Then, reread what you have written, and circle the most interesting idea.


2. Blueprinting- Think of places that are important to you, such as your house or a place you go to with friends. Draw a map of this place, marking different areas. For each location, list connected memories.

3. A Present That You Received- Think of a present you received that made you happy or proud or that disappointed you. Write about the occasion, the person who gave you the present, and your reaction to it (5-10 sentences).

Study for Unit 3 Vocab Test

Most of you did really well on the spelling portion of your Vocab Practice Test this past Monday. Which means that you only have to focus on doing just as well on the definition portion this Friday. Use your flashcards that you made to help study and if you need any extra hints on how to remember a word, whether its the spelling or definition, ask me before the test :)

Unit 3 extra credit words

I almost forgot! Here are the extra credit words for Unit 3- culminate, literate, miscellaneous, and unique. If you spell or match these words correctly on the test you receive extra credit points. If you don't spell or match these words correctly they do not count against you.

So far we've had 14 extra credit points available this quarter just through our vocabulary/spelling tests. Study and you may end up with extra points to help pull up your grade :)

Vocabulary Test Dates for Unit 3

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Your vocabulary/spelling test dates for unit 3 are the following: November 29th and December 3rd. Remember that the first date is the practice round and if you get any form of an A grade then you are not required to take it the second round. Another reminder is to pay attention to your homework because the sentences on the test will look oddly familiar if you do ;)

Have a safe Turkey week and I will endeavor to bring back lots of goodies from my conference.
